Chilean Fjords
discovery Cruise Sample itinerary
This is Chile's last frontier, a vast area of coastal land with
hardly any human habitation and not accessible by roads, that
has remained unexplored until now. The following is a special
invitation to a Sunday-Saturday cruise to areas only a few have
ever seen. Navigate where the Andes Mountains meet with the South
Pacific Ocean, a place with outstanding beauty, “gin”
clear waters, virgin temperate rain forests, waterfalls and wildlife
that has rarely seen any humans. The rich sea life will
show you, penguins, sea lions, rare birds and one of the world's
rarest sea mammals, the five-foot black dolphin of Chile. All
this aboard a comfortable, safe and fully equipped Hatteras 53
ft. motor yacht, with ample exterior decks, separate living and
dining areas both with great views to the outside, double passenger
staterooms with private baths, separate crew bath and Staterooms
and 2 motorized Zodiac type inflatable boats.
Saturday:
At the Santiago airport you will board the 3-hour flight to Balmaceda.
Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to take you to the base
port, this drive take a bit less that two hours. Here you will
check in at the beautiful and comfortable “Loberias del
Sur hotel” where you will spend the first night at the to
board the yacht early next morning. The hotel looks to a beautiful
bay with steep mountains in the background where the yacht will
be moored. During your time here you can relax, take short walks
to the water front or hike several rain forest trails on the hotel’s
private park located 5 miles away ( coordinate with reception
desk ) In the evening you can enjoy a great fish and seafood
dinner accompanied by a good selection of Chilean wines.
Sunday:
After an early breakfast at the hotel, a short 5 minute drive
will take you to the port. Here you will Board the yacht which
will serve as a floating lodge for the next six days and meet
your host, guides and crew. While the yacht navigates towards
our first destination, we will discuss the maps showing the different
fjords, bays and islands we will visit during the week. The head
guide and host will also describe to you the different adventures
we have planned for you. Later after getting organized, we will
enjoy lunch. As we approach our mooring site, we get our gear
ready for an evening’s exploration and hike or if you prefer,
a session of great fishing. We return to the boat for showers
drinks and Dinner. After our first adventure and some Pisco
Sours (a typical Chilean drink), you will be invited by the Captain
to join him for a delicious dinner while we hear our fresh stories
and the next day's plans.
Monday-Friday:
Coffee is hot and ready from early hours, cup in hand you enjoy
beautiful vistas while the boat navigates through the fjord which
will takes us to our next exploration site. From the observation
deck we see magnificent landscapes unfold in front of our eyes,
offering the opportunity to observe a variety of marine birds,
including the Megellanic Penguin or flightless Steamer ducks,
common to these unique marine environments.
You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the vistas or take
beautiful photographs as the morning sun rises above and the mountains
and is reflected in the ocean. Once we arrive to our first destination,
and after breakfast, Zodiacs will take you to shore. The guides
are able to contact the boat by radio in case we need some assistance
or to bring us the camera or jacket we forgot on board. Once on
shore, we begin our adventure by navigating and exploring the
seashore, seeping in the pristine beauty around us. Later we will
disembark and walk along the shore where we will observe a rich
and varied eco system including, mammals such as porpoises, sea
lions or sea otters, birds such as penguins, king fishers
, albatross, herons, wild geese, steamer ducks, cormorants, etc.
The surroundings are truly magnificent, tall mountains covered
with temperate rain forest almost to the snow line. Later we will
venture into the temperate rain forest where a different and beautiful
world will unfold in front of our eyes; with an amazing variety
of plants, trees and flowers all unique to this area as
well as many species of curious birds that will approach you because
they are not afraid of humans, the most common, but non the less
interesting is the “chucao” a small bird with an enormous
and beautiful voice belonging to the Tapaculo family endemic to
this part of South America, this is also the opportunity to listen
and hopefully see the great Magellanic wood pecker a beautiful
black bodied and redheaded 17 inch bird that favors
these old growth forests. We will also observe several species
of moss, lichens and ferns typical of the temperate rain forest,
including our only specie of tree fern.
The “coicopihue” a pink bell shaped flower two and
a half inches long, several species of wild orchids and the wild
Fuchsia are among the beautiful wild flowers that populate the
rainforest. The elephant ear or Gunera, a plant related
to the rhubarb, with giant leaves that can reach more than 8 feet
in diameter and two species of bamboo are also a must see.
For the more adventuresome explorers a hike through the forest
further up the valleys, navigation along the seashore looking
for sea life or beautiful water falls by zodiac is an attractive
option. If you enjoy snorkeling bring your wet suit, mask and
slippers.
There are ample opportunities to explore unique environments below
the surface, with rich sea life; variety of interesting species
of fish, coral, mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms (star fish
and sea urchins), etc. If you are able to gather stone crab, sea
urchin or Abalone, the chef will be most thankful. In general a
days program flows as follows: After an early breakfast, the Zodiacs
will take you and your guide to shore, you will explore, hike,
dive, photograph or fish until around 2:00pm, then you either
go back to the boat for lunch and a "siesta" or enjoy
a shore lunch, so you can continue you adventure until day's end
to go back to the boat for a hot shower, cocktails and a delicious
dinner.
During the week we generally explore two or three islands and
4 different fjords, each with one, two or more river valleys in
them. Some of the river valleys are quite long, and you can hike
upstream quite a distance, others we explore only a couple of
hundred yards from the ocean. We will move the Yacht as required
by conditions or if the area is of special interest to out guests,
we can stay longer as flexibility is the name of the game when
you have the option of moving your " lodge".Saturday:
8:30 AM departure from the boat in base port for a 2 hour transfer
to Balmaceda airport in time to catch the afternoon flight to
Santiago. |
